72nd Precinct Police Beat: Man beat by two perps over iPhone

Between Tuesday, June 7 and Monday, June 13, the 72nd Precinct received reports of four grand larcenies, one robbery and one criminal possession of a controlled substance. The 72nd Precinct serves Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights and South Park Slope.

FOOT RACE

A 26-year-old man was robbed on the northeast corner of Fourth Avenue and 50th Street on Monday, June 13 at around 4:20 a.m. The man was walking home from a restaurant when he was approached by two men who demanded he give them money. When the victim refused and tried to walk away, the perps pushed him down, punched and kicked him, stole his iPhone worth around $400 and fled on foot eastbound on 51st street.

The man tried to chase the crooks to get the phone back, but lost sight of them. No arrests have been made.

FAST AND FURIOUS

On Saturday, June 11, sometime between 3 and 7 p.m., a 31-year-old man gave $10,000 to an Asian male in his 30s to buy his vehicle. But when the victim gave the car owner the loot, the man drove away in the car with the cash and his wallet.

DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES

A 34-year-old man parked his vehicle in a fenced enclosure near East Third Street and Greenwood Avenue on Tuesday, May 31 at around 2 p.m. When he returned to the spot to retrieve the car on Tuesday, June 7, he discovered a thief had stolen it.

WHOA, BABY!

A 34-year old female told the police that after parking her vehicle, a 2016 red Hyundai Santa Fe van  in front of 520 53rd Street, she returned at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 and discovered that it had been stolen. Inside the car when it was taken were several car seats and baby carriages. The value of the stolen property is estimated at $26,680.

CARD SHARK AT WORK

Around 5 p.m. on Monday, June 13, a 31-year old male reported to the police that a few hours after he lost his wallet on the street on the way to a Chinese restaurant on 61st Street, he received a text message from his bank that someone had tried to use his credit card to buy a MetroCard two times at different locations. He also discovered that, in addition to his wallet and credit cards, his Social Security card and driver’s license had also been stolen. The perp is unknown.

UP IN SMOKE

A 24-year old male was arrested for smoking a marijuana cigarette in plain public view on the southwest corner of 50th Street and Third Avenue at around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. After the arrest, the officer discovered that the defendant possessed credit cards that had been reported stolen by a woman on April 17.
