Industry City adds some Serious Eats to its growing media presence

In a word, yum.

CEO of Industry City (IC) Andrew Kimball announced on Wednesday, July 27 that Serious Eats, a website focused on celebrating and sharing food enthusiasm through recipes, will operate out of the Sunset Park complex.

“I think (Serious Eats) is a company that is combining two of fasting growing tenant categories,  food makers and media, and that is what we love about it,” Kimball told this paper. “Their food journal and website are doing very well and they’re looking to grow and expand their creative company and Industry City is a great place to do it.”

“When we were deciding where to grow our business, Brooklyn was our first choice,” said Serious Eats CEO and founder Ed Levine in a statement. “It’s where many of our employees live and it’s become the epicenter of New York’s constantly evolving food culture. Within that, Industry City offered us the unique opportunity to be part of the kind of creative environment that we believe will support our continued growth.”

Serious Eats, whose recipes range from desserts to fine entrees created by professional in-house recipe developers, will be upgrading from its 1,600 square-foot space in Chinatown to a 9,000 square-foot space in IC, which will include a photo studio and test kitchen for content creation.

“They are a reflection of the rapidly growing presence of digital media in all of our lives,” Kimball added. “You can easily go to one location and learn about recipes and guides to eat and drink. It speaks to the expanded food culture in Brooklyn and the country.”

Kimball also said he was pleased to add all forms of businesses in the six-million-square-foot collection of warehouse structures. “It’s really a mashup of media, tech, fashion, photo production, food production and video production. All sectors are coming together here,” he said.

He added that the collaboration within different companies, helping to create jobs, has been a big plus for IC. “The fact that we take real interest in connecting tenants to each other and supporting them in job placement services as well as creating outdoor and indoor venues to gather with other tenants is a tremendous selling point for Industry City. So many companies moving here already are in Brooklyn.”

Serious Eats, which will be located in Industry City’s Building 4, 88 35th Street, will be joining several companies within media at IC, such as Time, Inc.

The lease between Serious Eats and IC was signed in May and negotiated by Alexander Golod of CBRE Group and Brett Harvey of IC’s leasing team.
