New Utrecht grad-turned-“Hamilton” star lands lead in forthcoming Netflix series

Twenty-four-year-old New Utrecht High School graduate and “Hamilton” star Anthony Ramos is taking his talents to the small screen.

The public school alum (Class of ’09) who has already made a name for himself on the Broadway stage, on which he currently stars as both John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Grammy-Award winning musical “Hamilton,” will star in Spike Lee’s forthcoming Netflix series, “She’s Gotta Have It,” a contemporary remake of the famous actor/director’s 1985 debut feature film.

“I am beyond proud of Anthony’s accomplishments,” said Sara Steinweiss, a fellow New Utrecht alum and former head of the musical theater program at the school who Ramos considers a close friend and mentor. “More importantly I’m proud that he remains humble and kind and true to who he is.”

The show — in which the Bushwick native will play Mars Blackmon, a character originated by Lee in the now-30-year-old movie — centers on Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20s and her three lovers: Greer Childs, Jamie Overstret and Blackmon.

Lee will direct all 10 half-hour episodes and serve as an executive producer with his wife Tonya Lewis Lee.

To boot, the show will film in Ramos’ home borough of Brooklyn.

“I cannot wait to watch his career soar,” said Steinweiss.
