Man will spend 23 years in prison after fatal Brighton Beach stabbing

A 26-year-old man received a sentence of 23 years in prison for fatally stabbing a man in the chest following an argument in Brighton Beach, Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced.

Jonathan Mansilla of Brighton Beach was sentencedby Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent DelGuidice on November 7 following his conviction of second-degree murder at a jury trial last month.

According to trial testimony, the defendant engaged the victim, Alberto Munive-Torres, 27, in a fight on June 27, 2014 at approximately 2:20 a.m. near the intersection of Brighton Fifth Street and Brighton Beach Avenue.

Munive-Torres tried to escape on his bicycle but Mansilla chased after him on foot. The defendant then retrieved a knife from his waistband, reached around the victim from behind, and stabbed him once in the chest.

When the victim eventually fell off his bike, the defendant kicked him repeatedly in the head and face. Surveillance footage from surrounding buildings captured the crime.

About 20 minutes later, Mansilla was apprehended a few blocks away with blood stains on his shirt. The blood belonged to the victim, according to trial testimony.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York determined Munive-Torres’ cause of death to be a single stab wound to the right chest.
