Bed Bath & Beyond and more now open in Sunset

Beyond!

The future is now at Sunset Park as Beyond at Liberty View Industrial Plaza on Third Avenue and 31st Street has officially opened its doors during what corporate officials are calling a soft opening.

This means that all stores inside this shopping center, which includes Buybuy Baby, Cost Plus World Market, Bed Bath & Beyond, Face Values and the Born in Brooklyn shop, which is part of the Bed Bath & Beyond store assortment and presents products from Brooklyn-based designers, are all open for business in time for the holiday season.

The Bay Market Kitchen, a food hall-style area featuring a variety of eats, alcoholic beverages, and live entertainment has also opened its doors.

“We are thrilled to be open in Brooklyn with our first BEYOND shopping experience,” said Leah Drill, senior associate of public relations for Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. “Beyond at Liberty View is a unique shopping destination that showcases our expansive assortment, enhanced services and ongoing commitment to customer service. We are very excited to service the thriving and dynamic Sunset Park community.”

According to Drill, Beyond currently plans to hold grand opening events during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, January 12-15.

Although now is the peak time for shoppers eager to snag holiday bargains, many locals don’t realize that the center is already open. “I didn’t know it was open until a friend told me,” said Sunset Park resident Carmen Oyola, who was excited to beat the lines. “It looks great. I never thought a place like this would exist in the neighborhood. It was also nice that not a lot of people were there yet.”

In addition to the restaurant, there is a seasonal market food pod and a coffee bar on the facility’s second floor, as well as another coffee bar located on the lower level. “The food pod’s menu celebrates Brooklyn and NYC-based specialty makers and serves as an homage to New York’s vibrant street food scene,” added Drill. “The coffee bar features Brooklyn-based Toby’s Estate Coffee espresso drinks, drip and pour-over coffee and locally sourced assorted treats and snacks.”

Tony Giordano, founder of the popular Sunset Parker Facebook page, has noticed the excitement among residents about the opening. ““We’re excited about Bed Bath & Beyond and just got their targeted USPS mailing, to our zip code, with 20 percent discounts,” he said, adding that bringing jobs to the community is a vital component of the project’s success. “But now the difficult part comes. Renting to retail stores is easy, but the arrangement with the city is that 85 percent of the building will be light manufacturing, bringing 1,300 permanent industrial jobs to the building. We will be keeping an eye on that. Obviously, we are much happier with this building’s use compared to its “sister” building, the Metropolitan Detention Center.”

This past November, Barry Feld, chief executive officer of Cost Plus World Market, who has been working on the Beyond at Liberty project for several years, agreed. “It’s important to note that we have a priority to hire locally so the community does benefit,” he said, also discussing the unique Brooklyn element of the venue.

“If you’re making local Brooklyn products, you’ll have this outlet to sell products,” added Feld, who pointed out that this was another way that local residents would benefit.
