An 89-year-old woman died on Sunday, December 17 after the Uber she was traveling in was struck by another vehicle in Dyker Heights, according to the 68th Precinct.
Police say that Helen Malinowski was traveling northbound as a passenger in a Toyota Camry on 11th Avenue near 81st Street when the vehicle was struck by a Kia going eastbound on 81st Street at around 2:44 p.m. The Toyota then struck another vehicle that was parked near the intersection.
EMS rushed to the scene and transported Malinowski to Lutheran Medical Center in critical condition where she pronounced dead on arrival. The Uber’s 42-year-old driver, Marlene Romero, and a 79-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and were also taken to Lutheran for treatment.
Romero was later charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle for driving with a suspended or revoked license. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating.
