Local pol advocates on behalf of corrections officers on steps of City Hall

State Senator Marty Golden, a former New York City police officer, joined a group of corrections officers on the steps of City Hall on Thursday, January 18 to rally for safer jails.

“Today we reaffirm our commitment to do more to protect the men and women who are New York’s Boldest from the dangers they face while performing their duty,” he said. “Over the last several years, jail violence has risen in all major categories.

“Each day, Corrections officers encounter some of the most dangerous inmates in the world,” he went on. “Many of these prisoners are mentally ill, unpredictable and extremely violent. New York’s ‘Boldest’ put their lives on the line in the name of public safety and law and order.”

The rally was held by COBA, the CCA and the ADWS, which are demanding that Mayor Bill de Blasio do more to protect those working on Rikers Island; many were also there to denounce Hizzoner’s plan to shut down the complex within 10 years.
