Three-alarm fire blazes through Bath Beach commercial building, devastating businesses

A three-alarm fire ripped its way through a two-story commercial building in Bath Beach during the early morning hours of Thursday, January 18.

According to the FDNY, the blaze started at around 3:46 a.m. on the first floor at Universal Ceramic Tile, 2162 Bath Avenue.

Officials say 33 units and over 130 firefighters rushed to the scene and that two firefighters sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by fire marshals.

Councilmember Mark Treyger, who was at the scene, thanked the FDNY, the 62nd Precinct and the New York City Department of Emergency Management, who were also on scene, and confirmed that eight businesses were severely impacted by the fire.

“The fire originated in the tile store and spread to other businesses,” he wrote on Facebook. “I spoke with the property owner of the building and some of the business owners and offered my office’s assistance. We will support the recovery of these vital small businesses in our neighborhood.”

He also stated that New York City Department of Buildings is en route to follow up on structural concerns.

“I’ll continue to be in touch with city officials and impacted businesses to ensure proper follow-up work is happening,” Treyger added. “The scene looks bad, but thank God again no lives were lost. We will rebuild and recover.”
