Local leaders honored as “Hidden Treasures of the Community”

The community’s hidden leaders are revealed for another year, as the Bay Ridge Community Council (BRCC) celebrated local leaders as “Hidden Treasures of the Community” for the 14th year.

The awards were presented at Shore Hill Housing, 9000 Shore Road, on February 27.

The honorees were Shirley Chin, a Girl Scout leader at St. Anselm Roman Catholic Church; St. Mary’s Orthodox Church’s John Alexander; Greenhouse Café’s Bobby Daquara; Alice Gibaldi, Mary Coren and Frances Coren, all Columbiettes aligned with Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus; David Matthews of the Owl’s Head Park Horticulture Group of the Shore Road Parks Conservancy; the Guild for Exceptional Children’s Antonio La Fata; the Bay Ridge Center; and BRCC’s own David Whitebook.

The award was created to “recognize and thank the people in the community who have given their time, talent and treasures over the years,” explained a pamphlet from the ceremony.

“Community service is a very important entity to Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton,” said Ralph Succar, president of BRCC. “These are people who take time and work hard to better the community.”

Succar encouraged all residents to work and help better the community.
