Sunset Park gears up for summer parties as Industry City hosts the Bell House Summer Series

It’s going to be a fun summer in Sunset.

Industry City and City Farm Presents are collaborating for a summer long series called the Bell House Summer Series. The five-month-long entertainment extravaganza, which began on Friday, June 1, promises to feature bands, comedians, DJ performances, outdoor games, drink specials and more. All of the activities will take place at the massive waterfront’s Courtyard 1/2, 274 36th Street.

The Bell House is a music and comedy venue that’s been around for 10 years. City Farm Presents owns several other properties and venues such as Union Hall, which is its main comedy and music venue in Brooklyn.

City Farm Presents had previously collaborated with Industry City in 2016 when they opened up its seasonal bar.

“This is great,” said Executive Producer Varghese Chacko. “Having worked with Industry City in the past, we fell in love with the space, so to watch it develop has been great. We really want to become a resource for the local community as well as other New Yorkers to offer a really awesome courtyard that has everything from these concerts and comedy to free happy hour events with DJ performances. We’ll be doing bocce leagues and other fun outdoor games. Entertainment outside is a sweet spot for New Yorkers, so to partner with Industry City and offer that to neighbors is special.

“We wanted to grow with our audience as well,” he added.

Bringing their production to Sunset Park from Gowanus, downtown Brooklyn and Park Slope has also been an important step.

“Sunset Park is a really special place,” he said. “There is so much happening there. To be able to expand our footprint into the neighborhood is awesome because the way I see it it’s like our front yard.”

Much of the entertainment will be affordable ticketed events, typically $10 to $25 to enter. Some events, including one program called Sunset Fridays with DJs, “a mix of music,” drink specials and lawn games, are free to get into, which was important to Chacko.

“To grow into a larger venue that is so accessible, it’s important to be able to aim to invite everyone,” he said. Sunset Fridays start June 8.

A relaxed atmosphere is also important to all involved.

“It’s one of the most laid-back entertainment venues that Brooklyn has,” Chacko added. “It’s close to the subway. It’s more of a community. We’re excited to build organically from our success at the Bell House to working with Industry City. I want people to say ‘I had a great time and I’d love to come back.'”
