Unsung Bay Ridge: Week of January 10

If Bay Ridge is indeed the ‘Gold Coast’ of Brooklyn, it is due in no small part to residents like Joseph Freda

For the past 15 years, Joe’s trademark smile has welcomed anyone who walked into State Senator Marty Golden’s office (since he was councilmember) with a question about veteran’s affairs or senior-related issues. He generously volunteers his wealth of experience as a former Marine and NYPD officer to help anyone in need.

Joe is active in St. Patricks’ parish where he also participates in the charitable events of the Men’s Club. I would like to recognize publicly Joe’s quiet dedication and devotion to the well-being of our community..

UNSUNG HEALTH TIPS: Folk remedies that help to keep us healthy

Last Sunday, my wife told me that she could not chew due to a shaky upper jaw tooth that was so far out of the gum, it was preventing her other teeth from touching. The gum was swollen and pain levels were slowly increasing.

She told me that, as impossible as it seemed, she was going to try to “save” the shaky tooth by tightening her gum. By the next morning she could chew and the swelling was gone.

Her folk remedy was to brush several times that day with Arm and Hammer Baking Soda and sea salt, including the gum of the shaking tooth.

After each brushing, she soaked a cotton pad with hydrogen peroxide and held it on both sides of the weak tooth. By the next day, she could chew normally. One week later, she remains symptom free.
