Viking Fest fierce with fun at annual celebration

Reenactors, and crafters, and games, oh my!

Bay Ridge’s 15th annual Viking Fest was the Scandinavian celebration of the season as locals indulged in authentic food, entertainment and activities at Owl’s Head Park on Saturday, May 16.

“Everybody gets to participate,” said Victoria Hofmo, president of the Scandinavian East Coast Museum. “It’s a thousand years we’ve been on the east coast of North America and people are really drawn to [Vikings]. I think there is an interest there. It’s important to teach about that culture.”

The day’s activities included Viking reenactors, medieval recreations, and music and dance performances by the Clann Eirann Pipers, the Donny Golden School of Irish Dance, the Young Dancers in Repertory and Ellen Lindstrom on Accordion.

“I think we had a good turnout,” added Hofmo. “A lot of kids came this year and interactive things grab them in. I was astounded at how much every year [it] improves. I really enjoyed it.”

The events sponsors were Councilmember Vincent Gentile, The Norwegian Consulate of New York, The Bay Ridge Baptist Church, and The Owl’s Head Park Alliance.
