Armed with paint, brushes and imagination, students from schools in southwest Brooklyn took to the streets on Tuesday, October 27, to transform storefronts across Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights into spooky and sweet Halloween-themed windows, part of the annual Bay Ridge Community Council’s Halloween Art Contest.
In front of the Home Reporter offices at Marine and Fourth Avenues, seniors from Fontbonne Hall Academy put their creative minds to work. The group of senior girls adorned the plate glass with one image inspired by the Dance of the Dead, while another depicted a zombie playing mini golf.
Cathy’s Diner at 95th Street and Fourth Avenue welcomed students from St. Patrick’s Catholic Academy for their festive paintings of pumpkins, RIP grave signs, candy corn, spiders and witch hats.
Fifth graders Michael and Fiona expressed how excited they were to be painting the Halloween images for their school. Michael excitedly said, “We’re missing class,” as he threw his arms up in the air.
Harbor View Car Service at 94th Street and Fifth Avenue also lent its windows to more seniors from Fontbonne Hall Academy. There, the students high school seniors painted an intricate yet vibrant and colorful “psychedelic skull,” as described by senior Alexa.
This is the 63rd Annual Halloween Poster and Storefront Window Painting Contest presented by BRCC. All participants will be awarded for their work, and winners will be announced during an upcoming BRCC meeting.
